THIS MONTH IN MUSIC NOTES
This month we will start a series on improvisation for all instruments. Even if you are just a beginner or a experienced player these items will provide a good guide to how to make a real good solo.
There is a lot to know but let's start with something anybody can do. Play a C chord, C, E, G, C on your instrument. That a Major chord, let's make the sound a little more interesting, add the 6th note of the C major scale A.
So now we have C,E,G,A, this is called a C6 chord, play that and that's a little more interesting sound. You can play it in any form, for instance E,G,A, C, or any other combination.
Try running up and down 2 octaves in different combinations. Now vary the length of some of the notes and vary the speed at which you are playing. You may not know it but that is the start of a good improvisation. Once you get that, try to do the same thing with these 3 chords: C6 chord (CEGA) Then D minor7 (DFAC) and then G7 (GBDF) Just play up and down these notes, varying the length of each and the speed at which you play them.
It may not sound like Charlie Parker but it's a great start. More next time.
